Krishna Omkar
is a past pupil of St. Columba’s. Currently he is reading for an
M. Phil in Sociology at Merton College, Oxford. |
|
|
|
|
|
At the beginning of March, he was
elected President of the Oxford University Quiz Society for the year
2006-2007. |
|
|
|
|
|
Krishna also captained the Merton
College Quiz Team to the finals of the Oxford inter-Collegiate Quiz,
putting in their best performance since 1986 to emerge runners-up. He’ll
now be captaining them for the BBC’s University Challenge. |

|
The Oxford Union Society is the
World’s most famous debating society, and is also currently ranked 1 in
the world in terms of debating success. Since October, he has
represented the OUS at the Inter-Varsity debates of the Universities of
Newcastle, Durham, King’s college London and Birmingham, and reached the
finals of the Bell Pairs Competition organized by the society (eight
speakers reach the finals). |

On March 2, Krishna was one of three
student speakers in the prestigious presidential Debate of the Union
(the other two speakers being candidates for president!) Fellow guest
speakers included the Indian High Commissioner and the Editor of the
Economist, as well as the Vice president of the European Parliament,
Edward McMillan Scott. |

He has been selected to join the
Union’s Library Committee, which looks after Oxford’s oldest and biggest
lending library; which with its murals by Walter Pater, William Morris
and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, is also a heritage site. |

|
He has also Adjudicated at Oxford’s
very own Inter-Varsity debate, the second biggest debating tournament in
the World (Oxford does not compete); as well as the Oxford schools
Debating Competition and the International competition for Young
Debaters (for school-children). |

He has been
Coaching young children from state Schools for the ‘London Debate
Challenge’ of the English speaking Union (ESU), and organization for the
promotion of speech and debate, headed by Prince Philip. In early April
he will coach students from Harrow. |
